American runner Fred Curley issued a stern warning to his competitors for the world title in the 100-meter race at the eighteenth edition of the World Championships in Athletics in Eugene, USA, by achieving the fastest time in the first round qualifiers Friday at Hayward Field, recording 9.79 seconds.
And imposed Curley, who achieved the best time this year (9.76 seconds) on his way to victory in the American trials qualifying for the World Cup on the same stadium to become the eighth fastest time in history, himself in the second series of qualifying against Britain's Zanelle Hughes (9.97 seconds).
Curley ran 7 races this year before today, all of them under 10 seconds, the last of which was during the American trials, where he achieved, within two hours, a personal best of 9.76 seconds in the semi-finals, then 9.77 seconds in the final.
Many pundits laughed when Curley decided last year to switch from the 400m to the 100m, but the tall, muscular American proved right by winning a silver in Tokyo and would be the sprinter to beat and deny him his first individual gold on the world stage.
And three other American runners managed to book their ticket to the semi-finals with the top of their groups, and it comes to Marvin Pricey (10.05 sec in the first set), Trayvon Brommel (9.89 sec in the third) and defending champion Christian Coleman (10.08 sec in the last seventh).
The United States hoped to win the third consecutive world title after the first between 1983 and 1991 and the second between 1997 and 2001.
